X-Country & Snowshoe Trails

Good morning everyone,

I hope that everyone had an opportunity to enjoy the amazing fall and took some time to explore the trails within the park.  With the early snow fall, the staff have been able to set the X-country ski trails.  Our staff cannot remember when we have been able to set them this early.  The Aspen trail has also been groomed for the snowshoe enthusiasts.  This trail was added to our trail system in 2021, to allow park users to explore the park on snowshoes.

The Tom Ouellette Nature trail has recently had a bit more work completed on the long loop.  Tom’s trail starts and finishes at the administration office.  This newly developed trail provides park visitors a very scenic view of the park.  It is a more challenging trail, but we encourage you to take your time as you climb the hill, as the view is worth your effort.  This trail is for hiking or snowshoeing only.

The park has seven pairs of snowshoes available at the administration office.  Park visitors can sign them out for a small fee.  Adults $10.00 and youth $5.00.  The snowshoes can be rented for the weekend and we encourage you to take this opportunity to try out a new activity or to share snowshoeing with friends and family.

The following are the sizes we have available.

  • 3 pairs – 21 inches (suitable for youth or adults between 4 – 5 feet tall.)
  • 3 pairs – 25 inches (suitable for youth or adults 5-6 feet tall.)
  • 2 pairs – 30 inches (suitable for adults over 6 feet tall.)

We encourage everyone to come out to the park and enjoy our trails.  Saskatchewan Parks were created for the enjoyment of the Saskatchewan people and for visitors to the province.  The staff at Makwa Lake Provincial Park are working hard to ensure our visitors are provided with all season activities, to encourage healthy active lifestyles.

Our administration office is open Monday to Friday 8:00am-12:00pm, 1:00pm-4:30pm.  If you require more information please do not hesitate to call, Jacqulyn would love to help you out. (306)837-2410.  I have attached the Trail Brochure for everyone to share.  Matching wayfinding signs have been added to the trail for a safer more enjoyable experience.  One quick tip, take a picture of the wayfinding sign at your starting location for future reference, as each sign indicates “you are here” with a red dot.  This will allow you to track your progress.

One final note, please do not walk or snowshoe on the trails that have been set for X-country skiing (refer to the attached brochure).  Please be respectful of other trail users and ensure your pets are on a leash at all times.

See you on the trails,
